Rioters set cars on fire, loot shops in Stockholm suburb

Trump later said his "You look at what's happening last night in Sweden" remark was in response to a Fox News report on the country's refugee crime crisis that aired on Friday evening.

Rinkeby is an area of approximately 16,000 people, the Times said, the overwhelming majority of whom are immigrants, particularly Arabs and Somalis.

Multiple criminologists in Sweden contacted by The Washington Post over the weekend said that the notion that immigrants were responsible for a large proportion of crime there was highly exaggerated. "They're having problems like they never thought possible".

Trump clarified on Twitter that he drew his claim of immigrant violence in Sweden - made at a campaign speech in Melbourne, Florida - from a Fox News segment in which two Swedish police officers were interviewed.

Riots such as this one have occurred in Stockholm's suburbs in the past, but officials said they are infrequent.

Police spokesman Lars Bystrom said: "This kind of situation doesn't happen that often but it is always regrettable when it happens".

A photographer from the Dagens Nyheter newspaper also claimed that he spent a night in hospital after he was assaulted by a group of 15 people in Rinkeby as he attempted to report the unrest.

The photographer said the attack occurred just after 10:00 pm at night and said, "I was met with a lot of punches and kicks on both the body and the head".

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported that at least two people, including a shopkeeper, had been beaten by the mob.

The unrest in the Rinkeby suburb on Monday night came after police tried to arrest a suspect on drugs charges.

When a riot broke out in a predominantly immigrant Stockholm suburb this week, the biggest surprise for many Swedes was that a police officer found it necessary to fire his gun.

"Some may have disappeared, others have been added, it is hard to get a handle on how many exactly", he told SVT. 'We have a fairly large number of police officers trained to handle this type of a situation'.

Police managed to restore order only after midnight. "What we see may be a result of our increased pressure on criminals in the area", Stockholm regional police chief Ulf Johansson said.

Swedish Interior Minister Anders Ygeman was asked by the Expressen newspaper Tuesday whether he was upset by Trump's unsought assessment. For reasons not yet undisclosed by the police, word of the arrest prompted a crowd of youths to gather.
