Sensex closes 184 points down; Tata Motors plunges 10%

Government data on Friday showed that industrial output contracted 0.4% in December to a four-month low, with consumer durables output plummeting by over 10% and an overall decline in manufacturing, impacted by demonetization.

Indian equities markets closed on a flat-to-positive note on Monday as positive global cues and inflow of foreign funds buoyed investors' sentiments.

The barometer 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE, which opened at 28,450.42 points, closed at 28,351.62 points - up 17.37 points, or 0.06 per cent, from the previous close at 28,329.70 points.

Shares fall in Thomas Cook as results disappoint
Standard Life, which holds 13% of Thomas Cook shares and is the company's second biggest shareholder, voted against the pay plans. The firm said average selling prices for outbound holidays from the United Kingdom are 9 per cent higher than a year ago.

Asian markets remained mixed on Wednesday.

Globally, Japan's Nikkei was down 0.16 percent, Shanghai's Composite Index shed 0.14 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped 0.03 percent in their early deals.

European stocks were broadly higher in early trade, with banks leading the surge on expectations that they will benefit from the era of higher interest rates.

United Kingdom retail sales saw a slowdown in January
Over the last three months, LFL food sales increased 0.6% and 2.0% on a total basis, above the 12-month average. The figures were largely driven by slower non-food sales, although spending on groceries held up.

Of the 30-share Sensex pack, 15 closed with gains, while others ended in the negative terrain. Profit- booking by retail investors dragged small-cap and mid-cap indices lower by 1.52 per cent and 1.16 per cent, respectively.

However, Tata Steel gained by 1.48 per cent, followed by HUL 1.12 per cent, PowerGrid 1.08 per cent and Wipro 0.96 per cent.

However, shares of Hindalco Industries rose 1.3 percent to trade at Rs 187.40 after the company yesterday reported a standalone net profit at Rs 320.56 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2016. Auto index dropped more than 665 points.
