Mystery Light In Sky Was Navy Missile Launch

Numerous area residents posted on social media about the trail of light that flashed by at about 6:30 a.m. and many speculated it was a meteor.

John Daniels, a U.S. Navy Public Affairs Officer, confirmed the bright light was a scheduled Trident II (D-5) missile test from a submarine off the coast of California.

The Trident II D5 is the latest generation of the US Navy's submarine-launched ballistic missiles and has a range of 7,359 km (4,573 miles). Per the Navy, the missiles never crossed over land and were not armed.

The missile launches were apparently planned for years. "They are tracked from multiple sources from launch until final impact in the ocean", Daniels said.

"The only mission the Trident II (D5) missile and submarine has is to deter a potential nuclear attack against the United States", Thompson said.
