Alex Reyes reportedly needs Tommy John Surgery

Reyes, who was ranked as one of the top 10 prospects in baseball by both Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus, will undergo Tommy John surgery on his pitching arm, and the procedure will sideline him for the entire 2017 season.

Reyes, 22, missed his first scheduled bullpen session of spring training due to discomfort in his pitching elbow, and Cards general manager John Mozeliak sent Reyes to get an MRI. In 46 innings last season, Reyes whiffed 52 and posted a 1.22 WHIP. If he is unable to pitch, the Cardinals have in-house options with right-handers Michael Wacha, former closer Trevor Rosenthal and rookie Luke Weaver, who also made his major-league debut previous year. The top prospect pitched in 12 games (five starts) in 2016, going 4-1 and registering a 1.57 ERA. He also had been selected to pitch for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.

As mentioned earlier, this isn't the first time a Cardinals starter has been lost early in the season to a significant injury. His fastball averaged more than 97 miles per hour.

The Cardinals are equipped to handle Reyes' injury from a depth perspective, but losing their best prospect on the cusp of stardom for any length of time will be a hard pill to swallow. "Let's put it together and see what it looks like and if it's best for our club". "You want to be on the field and that's something that can't happen right now".
