Jallikattu: Supreme Court raps TN for stir, clears the new law

The Tamil Nadu assembly unanimously passed the Jallikattu Bill on 23 January, annulling the ban on the bull taming sport.Tamil Nadu Governor Vidyasagar Rao on 21 January sanctioned the ordinance issued by the state government. "You please convey this", a bench of Justices Dipak Misra and R F Nariman told the advocates appearing for Tamil Nadu. The bench said, "Tell your government that law and order is primacy in civilized society and we can't tolerate such incidents".

The government faced the court's censure for letting people defy its order and not taking control of the law and order situation.

"What was the necessity of doing all kinds of street march?" However, the top court refused to stay the law, even as it agreed to hear petitions filed by animal rights groups.

Since the matter was sub-judice before the Supreme Court, the ChiefMinister also urged Mr Modi to advise Kerala not to take up any project or works without getting the concurrence of the Tamil Nadu governmentand until the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) comes into force and judicial references were finally settled. The government had promulgated the ordinance in a bid to defuse the raging protests across the State, especially at the Marina Beach, by students and others, demanding lifting of the ban on jallikattu.

The court also wanted to know how many people lost their lives during recent bull-taming sports that took place after law was amended, while adding that describing the breeding of native bulls - that are used in Jallikattu - as culture was a question that has to be debated.

The Supreme Court said, "We are governed by the rule of law".
