Baker, Healey To Fight Trump's Executive Order On Immigration

The president has insisted that the 90-day order is not a "Muslim ban", and is being done to ensure that there is "extreme vetting" of people coming in from unstable parts of the world.

The Republican governor of MA said Tuesday that he will support the state attorney general's challenge to President Trump's recent executive order on immigration. The former congressman said the order sends the wrong message to other countries that the US works with and "undermines the mission of the University of MA".

The lawsuit argues that Trump's immigration order, which temporarily barred immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries, violated the rights of visa-holders and permanent residents who were detained at airports over the weekend.

During Tuesday's news conference, which is scheduled for noon, Healey will be joined by UMass President Marty Meehan, Boston University President Robert Brown, Carol Rose, the president of the ACLU of MA, as well as immigrant advocates and representatives from health care and nonprofits, such as Oxfam.

Jaime-Lee aims for Miss Universe crown
January 28, which falls on Saturday, has been declared a special non-working day under list of 2017 holidays. Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach from the Philippines will crown her successor at the end of the event.

She said she was not convinced the order was lawful.

Thousands of people took to the streets and airports of major USA cities over the weekend protesting the action, which has provoked a global backlash including from US allies who view the ban as discriminatory.

The lawsuit claims Trump's order is unconstitutional because it takes away rights without due process, discriminates against people based on their country of origin and religion, and infringes on the sovereign authority of MA.

Legal challenges to the order resulted in federal judges in five cours around the country ordering a halt to deportations and detentions stemming from the order.

"It pains and saddens me and I am big supporter of keeping our country safe", Meehan told Boston Herald Radio. On behalf of the Commonwealth, my office is challenging the immigration ban to hold this administration accountable for its un-American, discriminatory, and reckless decision-making.

Both policies are in line with campaign promises by Republican businessman-turned-politician Trump, who vowed to build a wall on the Mexican border to stop illegal immigration and to take hard-line steps to prevent terrorist attacks in the United States.

UMass President Marty Meehan said the public higher education system has 166 faculty and staff from impacted countries and more than 300 students.

After being detained and questioned for three hours Saturday at Boston's airport as they returned from an academic conference, the professors were released.
