Vancouver mosque hosts Quebec shooting vigil

Police said they had arrested two men, including one who called 911 to say he was armed but ready to give himself up, but later said just one remains a suspect.

"Quebec is a good, generally loving society but we have these devils as other societies have", Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said.

A Vancouver Mosque is hosting a vigil Monday evening for the victims of Sunday night's deadly shooting in Quebec City.

One of the men was arrested at the scene of the attack, while the other was arrested in his auto on a bridge near d'Orleans, after he called 911 to say he wanted to cooperate with police. In 2013, police investigated after a mosque in the Saguenay region of Qu├ębec was smeared with what have been believed to be pig's blood. At least 14 others suffered minor injuries and were released, according to the University of Quebec Hospital Centre spokeswoman Genevieve Dupuis. The dead ranged in age from age 35 to 70, she said, and 39 people were unharmed.

During his daily press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer used the attack to justify Trump's controversial travel ban for immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries, calling it "a awful reminder of why we must remain vigilant and why the president is taking steps to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to our nation's safety and security".

U.S. President Donald Trump also spoke to Trudeau by phone Monday to offer his condolences to all Canadians in the wake of the deaths.

In a joint statement on the shooting, Coadjutor Bishop Bruce Myers of Quebec and Bishop Mary Irwin-Gibson of Montreal said: "Along with our grief and prayers we are called as disciples of Jesus to express our solidarity with our neighbors who are Muslim".

"It is heart-wrenching to see such senseless violence", Trudeau said.

Dez: More Giants should have Beckham's passion

"This attack offers another sad reminder that our country is not immune to terrorism and it demonstrates we must always be vigilant against this threat", Ambrose said. When he arrived, the mosque had been transformed by police into a crime scene. Practising Muslims do not eat pork. Quebec City Mayor Regis Labeaume, appearing shaken, said, "No person should have to pay with their life, for their race, their color, their sexual orientation or their religious beliefs", Labeaume said.

The shooting occurred just days after President Trump issued an executive order banning travelers from seven majority-Muslim countries. Trustee Haroon Khan says a handful of people gathered at the mosque last night, once the news broke about the shooting. The New York Police Department also said it was stepping up patrols at mosques and other houses of worship.

Majdi Dridi of the Muslim Association of Canada attends the mosque regularly, and said dozens of people flock there for prayers, with upwards of 250 people on Friday nights. "This is the Muslim people", said Younes Doleh. "I think that's a good idea".

"For us Muslims, Quebec and Canada had been a safe zone", said Hamid Nadji, who learned of the shooting from a friend and rushed to the mosque area.
