Tesla just began rolling out its new and improved Autopilot

The bottom line is that Tesla is a very different kind of auto company from what consumers are used to, and that extends to their development cycle.

Most notably, Autosteer, the function of Autopilot that keeps the vehicle within a lane and works using the vehicle's traffic-aware cruise control (TACC) system, will be limited to 45 miles per hour and confined for use only on highways with clear lane markings.

Autosteer is intended for use on highways with clear lane markings and maintains position within the lane in slow-moving traffic. Owners will not need to do anything special for the software to be downloaded.

That's definitely a more aggressive upgrade pace than you can expect from models offered by traditional automakers like GM, Ford and Toyota.

Owners now have access to Traffic Aware Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, and Autosteer. The NHTSA closed its case last week, finding no evidence of a defect in the Autopilot system inside a Model S that crashed into the side of a semi-truck last May.

Closing its investigation into the crash, the NHTSA said its examination did not identify any defects in design or performance of the AEB or Autopilot systems of the subject vehicles nor any incidents in which the systems did not perform as designed.
