Spokane Police officer saves woman from burning auto

A Washington state police officer is being hailed a hero for rescuing a woman from a burning vehicle on Saturday and the dramatic moment was captured on his body camera. When Novak tried to get out of the auto, the locks would not work.

"He was able to break through the drivers seat window and pulled her out", says Michelle Anderson, the police departments public safety communications manager.

And Officer Schwering didn't give up. It is still unclear what caused the fire.

"He was swinging on that thing like Ken Griffey Jr.in the home run derby and beating it with all his might", Novak said. "I got on my back and started kicking the windows with both of my feet with all my might".

Novak told Krem 2 News that her engine cut off and the power locks on the doors became stuck after hitting frozen slush in the road.

"Right now I'm really blessed".

Novak called Schwering "a genuine hero". "No, I have never been in that situation", said Schwering.

"I honestly believed that I may not make it out of there", Novak told KXLY. "He didn't have to stand here", she said.

Schwering was later treated at a hospital and released.

He then was forced to reach into the vehicle and pull the entire driver's side window out, allowing him to help Novak climb out the window.
